A few words from our Director...
Dartmoor Zoo is an Educational Institution. It’s a place which inspires people; bursting with plant life and indigenous animals like dormice, robins, bats and butterflies. Not to mention the exotic animals like tigers, lions and bears who peep out at you from between the trees. Visitors arrive jaded and leave energized, soothed by the special mix of flora and fauna which directly mimics the landscape in which we evolved. And hopefully they will have learned something about the natural world.
Modern zoos are first and foremost places of learning. We try to breed endangered animals, but in conservation terms we are really only scratching the surface. If we successfully breed from Sovereign, our Jaguar, there is currently little chance of reintroducing his cubs into the wild. Farmers, hunters, and logging roads carving his habitat into unsustainable islands ensure that at present there is no wild safe enough to release these precious animals into. Zoos are safeguarding these species while drawing attention to the natural world, and our impact on it.
We’re trying to stimulate the next generation into getting involved in solving the conservation conundrum, and there is no better place to do that than Dartmoor Zoo. Luckily, one of the people our zoo has inspired is Amy, our excellent Head of Education, who aims to create a world class education department, right here. We certainly have the raw materials. All we need is open young minds to inspire.

A new vision for education out of the classroom...
Welcome to the inspirational and responsive education facility at Dartmoor Zoo. We are very proud of our provision in the education of all members of groups and the general public who visit us over the year. From toddler groups to schools and even post-graduate research students, we aim to provide a full and personalised educational experience.
As a fully qualified secondary science teacher I thrive in a classroom environment where I can enthuse and develop understanding and appreciation of the natural world.
Dartmoor Zoo’s new education centre next to our woodland wolf enclosure is home to a variety of species, many of which are new to the collection in 2011. Our new office and classroom facilities have allowed further educational developments. At the zoo we now deliver the Level 3 extended Diploma in Animal Management in conjunction with Bicton College.
Enjoy reading about our diverse range of educational opportunities and if you are inspired with original requirements for your group or students please do not hesitate to contact me so we can discuss how to make it reality!
