A few words from our Director...
Dartmoor Zoo is an Educational Institution. Our mission statement is:
‘To protect endangered species, promote biodiversity, and educate about the need for conservation’
Of all our achievements since taking over Dartmoor Zoo – membership of BIAZA (British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria); Eden TV Attraction of the Year award (voted by the public); the Hollywood film, We Bought a Zoo, based on our story – it is our thriving education and research department s of which I am most proud.
My Masters Degree was in Science Communication, and DZP is a living, breathing, 3D example of this. From basic lessons about the food chain which can be learned from our work managing ponies on Dartmoor, to the direct connections with diminishing habitats around the world brought to life by the largest collection of endangered big cats in the South West. Here, we are able to draw on a rich seam of real-world examples to achieve specific learning objectives dictated by the curriculum.
An educational visit to DZP is not just an enjoyable day out for children and teachers (though it is that too). It really can be a life-changing introduction in to the world’s ecology, sewing seeds of enthusiasm for engaging with t he environment in the future.
Dartmoor Zoo is purpose-built for switching on young minds. It’s one of the things we do best. Please bring some with you when you come.
Taking education forward...
Welcome to DZP education centre. I am a fully qualified secondary science teacher with an outstanding team of Biologists, Researches and Volunteers. Together we can enthuse students in all subjects from pre-school through to post 16 and beyond. We aim to take learning outside the classroom to new heights, providing tailor-made inspirational educational experiences for your students.
DZP is home to a huge variety of exotic and native species that act as key characters in our workshops, many of which have been developed in direct response to the wishes expressed by the educators who’ve used our services.
I hope you enjoy reading about the diverse range of activities we offer and please remember that isn’t the end. If you have any ideas or requirements for your students then please don’t hesitate to contact me so we can bring your ideas to life.
